Free English Classes Open Doors for Ukrainian Residents in Alnwick
For many Ukrainians now living in Northumberland, learning English is more than just acquiring a language – it’s about unlocking new opportunities and integrating into their community. Recognising this need, local support groups and dedicated volunteers have launched free weekly conversational English classes in Alnwick, specifically designed to help Ukrainian nationals improve their language skills.
Organised by ESOL coordinator Iryna Zhomer, the classes offer a supportive space where participants can build confidence through practical English conversation. Ruth Darby, a qualified language teacher leading the classes, emphasises the importance of these sessions: “Learning English empowers students to access work and services. These classes help build confidence and connections, which is crucial for people who want to be part of the local community. I enjoy meeting with students and sharing language and cultural experiences, and I hope it’s as enriching for students as it is for me.”
The classes are structured around engaging topics and fun activities, encouraging learners of all levels to participate. Andrew Duff, chairman of the Alnwick Support Group for Ukraine, describes the environment as “friendly and supportive,” welcoming anyone looking to improve their English language skills.
This initiative exemplifies how local communities and organisations can collaborate to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. It’s a testament to the power of community-driven support, helping Ukrainian residents gain the language skills needed to pursue jobs, education, and a more connected life in Northumberland.
